NORMAL - It wouldn't be a stretch to call Jordan Threloff the "biggest" recruit in Tim Jankovich's three years as Illinois State's basketball coach.

Threloff, a 6-foot-10, 260-pound senior from DeKalb High School, officially signed his national letter of intent Thursday to play for the Redbirds beginning next season.

"He's definitely an ingredient we don't have, and we felt we strongly needed a very big presence inside," said Jankovich. "He certainly fits that, but he's much more than that. He has a very good touch and he's a very good shooter and passer. He loves the game and has great enthusiasm for the game."

Threloff averaged 22 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.5 blocks last season for DeKalb. He also enjoyed a successful stint on the AAU circuit for Rising Stars. Threloff is ranked as the state's No. 14 prospect by ChicagoHoops.com.

ISU could have its own version of the Twin Towers the next three seasons against Missouri Valley Conference teams with Threloff playing alongside 6-9 Jackie Carmichael.

"That definitely gives us the option of playing big or gives us some combinations if we want to play small," said Jankovich. "Our league has been extremely big on the inside at the center position.

"We have not been that big, although Dinma (Odiakosa) has been fantastic for us and I wouldn't trade him for the world. But it never hurts to have great size inside, particularly when they are talented offensive players."

Threloff selected ISU over Drake and Western Michigan. Jankovich said ISU has been heavily pursuing Threloff for the last two years.

ISU assistant coach Rob Judson was instrumental in the Redbirds landing Threloff. Judson was Northern Illinois' coach when Threloff served as a ball boy during games and later attended the Huskies' summer camps.

The Redbirds signed Lincoln College guard Kenyon Smith on Wednesday, the first day of the one-week fall signing period.

"As always our assistant coaches have done a tremendous job," said Jankovich. "They do the lion's share of the recruiting and don't always get the credit."

Jankovich doesn't anticipate ISU signing any more players in the fall or spring, "but we always keep looking just in case," he said.

Rubin has concussion: Junior guard Alex Rubin suffered a concussion near the end of Wednesday's exhibition game against Quincy. He also needed a couple stitches in his head.

Jankovich said Rubin, who was a starter Wednesday, is questionable for Sunday's 2:30 p.m. season opener at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
