NORMAL — A former standout linebacker and 12-year defensive coordinator at Purdue, Brock Spack was considered for the Boilermakers’ head coaching job four years ago when Danny Hope was hired.

Now that Hope has been dismissed at Purdue and Spack has banked four consecutive winning seasons at Illinois State, the Redbird coach’s name is once again being mentioned in conjunction with the top job in West Lafayette, Ind.

Despite that, Spack said Tuesday, “I don’t see that happening.

“Yeah, I’m not interested right now. Right now my focus is only on getting Illinois State ready to play. They (Purdue) know all they need to know about me. It didn’t happen four years ago, so it’s not going to happen now.”

Spack has guided the Redbirds to a 27-17 record. No. 16-ranked ISU will play in its first Championship Subdivision playoff game since 2006 on Saturday in a 1 p.m. (Central) game against No. 7 Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.

“My wife (Aimee) and I are very happy here. I work for great people here,” said Spack. “When I took this job, I took it to try to become a nationally prominent football program. I don’t think we’re quite there yet. There is some unfinished business down here so I don’t see that working out.”

Spack is pleased with the progress the ISU program has made in his tenure.

“We’ve got good kids here,” he said. “I’ve sat in a lot of these people’s homes and told these kids to come to Illinois State.  That’s where I plan to be.”

That is easy to say when an offer hasn't been made yet. Let's see what he is saying if Purdue offers up a $900,000 salary. I bet he can see it happening then!
