CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Illinois State's James Brandenburg broke his own school record to win the heptathlon in the Jake Jennett Open indoor track meet on Friday.
Brandenburg scored 5,195 points to break his old record of 5,185. He clocked 7.14 seconds in the 60-meter dash, long jumped 23 feet, 3½ inches, threw the shot put 38-9, high jumped 6-2¼, skimmed over the 60 high hurdles in 8.32, pole vaulted 12-7½ and ran the 1,000 in 2:51.96.
Teammate Derek Wegman, buoyed by a personal best pole vault clearance of 13-3½, placed fourth with 4,665 and now ranks fifth in ISU history.
In the women's pentathlon, ISU's Tessa Holland took second (3,472) behind Northern Iowa's Lauren Frederick (3,545). Redbirds Jordyn Bruce (3,390) and Ashlee Stieler (3,294) were fifth and sixth.
The Redbirds will be back in action at Saturday's 10 a.m. Illini Classic at Champaign.
