Former Illinois State men’s basketball guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Bakken Bears to the Danish Basketball League championship by beating Horsens IC, 81-73, at Aarhus, Denmark on Monday night.
Bakken won the championship series, 4-1, to clinch a spot in the 2017-18 Basketball Champions League.
Akoon-Purcell, who also collected eight rebounds and four assists, was named Finals MVP. A rookie, he also garnered Basketligaen Player of the Year accolades after averaging 22.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Bears in 2016-17.
Akoon-Purcell graduated from Illinois State in 2016 after averaging 13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game throughout his two seasons as a Redbird (2014-16).
McClain earns honor: ISU's Amanda McClain was named the Missouri Valley's Field Athlete of the Week. McClain won the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 4 3/4 inches at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic. She also was part of a winning 1,600-meter relay squad (3:42.95).
Women's golf in 18th: The IWU women's golf team is 18th after day one of the 22-team NCAA Division III Championships at Houston's Bay Oaks Country Club.
The Titans shot a 51-over 339. The leader is defending champion Rhodes with a 301.
IWU's Jordan Koehler is tied for 37th with an 80 on the par-72, 5,869-yard layout. Melanie Wolf is tied for 72nd (85) while Olivia Ruff is tied for 81st (86). Lizzy Mavrogenes is tied for 87th (88) and Olivia Kief is 104th (94).
Williams' Phoebe Mattana fired a record-tying 3-under 69 to take the lead.
