Noah Sadler, Owen Miller, Joe Aelits and Derek Parola homered as the Illinois State reached double digits for the third straight game in a 13-10 victory over Morehead State on Friday at Morehead, Ky. 

ISU (4-3) jumped out to an early lead as Sadler led off the game with his third home run of the season. The Redbirds received three RBIs apiece from Parola and Aeilts.

Winning pitcher Brady Huffman (1-2) allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out six in six innings.

Softball team splits The ISU softball team split two games in the LSU Tiger Classic at Baton Rouge, La.

ISU (6-11) opened the day with a nine-inning 4-3 victory over Florida Atlantic that featured a two-run single by Riley Phipps in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Redbirds later fell to No. 10 LSU, 1-0, in nine innings.

Sarah Finck (5-4) earned the win in the pitching circle after allowing nine hits and four walks in nine innings. She helped her own cause by notching two of ISU's seven hits. Allison Spence and Kori Mesecher also drove in runs.

Against LSU (15-2), the host Tigers scored the winning run in the 10th when Allie Walljasper drive in Claire Weinberger. Morgan Day (1-4) went the distance and took the loss despite fanning six and walking four during a six-hitter.

ISU's only hit against Maribeth Gorsuch (3-0) came from Felde. Grosuch fanned 12 and walked one.


Baseball team sweeps: The IWU baseball team opened its sesason with a doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne by scores of 11-0 and 5-3 at St. Louis.

In the opener, Garrett Shea's three-run home run keyed a seven-run second inning for the Titans. Teammate Gino Cavalieri had two doubles and two RBIs. Starter Nick Brune (1-0) got the win after allowing two hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, John Bosco had three of IWU's nine hits. Teammate Mike Plecki added two hits and three RBIs. Winning pitcher Eric Bennes (1-0) went five innings, striking out six, walking one and allowing two hits. Braden Miller picked up the save after striking out two in the ninth.

Softball squad splits: The IWU softball team opened the season with a 13-1 victory over Coe (1-2) before falling, 15-11, to St. John Fisher (1-1) at Tucson, Ariz. Brea Walker (1-0) and Ally Wiegand combined on a three-hitter in the victory.

The Titans' 14-hit attack received three hits apiece from Shlby Fulk and Sydney Alery, who had had two doubles. Kara Bischoff had two hits to drive in three runs.

In its loss, IWU received a three-run homer from Alery in the fourth and a solo shot from Berghoff in the first. Wiegand (0-1) took the loss in relief of Mackenzie Marquis.

Women's lacrosse falls: The IWU women's lacrosse team rallied from a 10-4 first period deficit, but fell short in a 14-11 loss to Colorado College at Bloomington.

Dani Engelbreit had four goals for the Titans (2-1) with Abby Kushina, Riley Rooney and Claudia Richman adding two each. 


Baseball team wins 2: The Heartland baseball team swept a season-opening doubleheader against visiting Triton College by scores of 7-6 and 4-1.

In the opener, Michael Bieterman had two hits and knocked in three runs. Zach Frey picked up the win in relief, striking out three in one inning. Jonny Burkhart fanned two in the seventh to pick up his first collegiate save.

In game two, winning pitcher Jim Jarecki struck out six in five innings while allowing one run. Andrew Zapka fanned three in two innings for the save.
