Illinois State junior forward Simone Goods earned Newcomer of the Week honors for the third time this season after pacing the Redbirds to a 53-41 victory over Bradley on Sunday at Peoria.
Goods led all scorers with 25 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. It was the sixth time she has scored 20 or more points in a game.
Goods became the third MVC player this season to earn a league-high four weekly honors, joining Evansville’s Hannah Noe and Southern Illinois’ Abby Brockmeyer.
Bovee, Emanuel honored: After leading the ISU men to their first Missouri Valley Conference title since 1999, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Bovee and Associate Head Coach Brenton Emanuel have earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional honors.
Bovee was named the Men’s Coach of the Year and Emanuel was deemed the Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the Midwest Region. It is the first such honor for each.
Bovee's team won the MVC title by 70 points over Indiana State. Emanuel, who primarily coaches sprint, hurdle and relay groups, saw his athletes contribute 77 1/2 of ISU's 180 points.
Day nets softball award: Illinois State freshman Morgan Day has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for softball.
Day pitched 21 innings in three games at the LSU Tiger Classic, including starts against No. 10 LSU and Purdue. She allowed five runs while striking out 10, topped by a career-high six in ISU's 1-0 10-inning loss to LSU. Day had a 0.98 ERA for the weekend and pitched two complete games, including a 2-0 shutout of Purdue.
Glueck, Goodman eye nationals: Seniors Amelia Glueck and Karly Goodman will represent Illinois Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Birmingham, Ala..
Glueck, a Tremont High School gradaute, has the third best qualifying mark in the long jump at 19 feet-1 1/2 inches. Goodman has posted the seventh best weight throw at 57-9 1/2. Both will have their finals on Friday.
