TAMPA, Fla. — The Illinois State softball team opened its season with a 3-0 loss to South Florida on Thursday in the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament at USF Softball Stadium.
The Redbirds managed three hits off a trio of USF pitchers and stranded nine baserunners. Alyssa Wiebel's two-out double in the fourth inning was the lone extra-base hit for ISU.
Starting pitcher Sarah Finck held the Bulls in check through the first five innings, yielding just one hit before USF broke through in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits.
The Redbirds resume play Friday against UAB at 1:30 p.m. and against No. 2 Florida at 3:45.
