ISU football file for all-MVFC

Illinois State senior defensive back Davontae Harris (10) tackles Western Illinois quarterback Sean McGuire earlier this month at Hancock Stadium. Harris was named first-team all-conference Monday for the second year in a row.

NORMAL — Illinois State landed three seniors and one sophomore on the first unit of the Missouri Valley Football Conference all-star team, the league announced Monday.

Senior defensive lineman Dalton Keene, senior defensive back Davontae Harris, senior place-kicker Sean Slattery and sophomore running back James Robinson represented the Redbirds on the first team.

ISU wide receiver Spencer Schnell and defensive back Alec Kocour were named to the second team. Redbirds receiving honorable mention were offensive lineman Dean Helt, defensive lineman Adam Conley and tight end Tylor Petkovich.

Keene, who finished third in MVFC Defensive Player of the Year voting, was an honorable mention pick in 2015 and part of the second team in 2016. Keene totaled 45 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, eight sacks and six pass breakups his final season.

Harris' first-team honor was his second, the first Redbird defensive back to accomplish that feat since Sam Young in 1999-2000. Harris was second in the Valley in passes defended and added 57 tackles and two sacks.

Slattery connected on 14 of 18 field goal attempts, including 6 of 7 accuracy from 40 yards or longer, and was perfect on 34 extra point kicks.

Robinson ranked second in the MVFC and 11th nationally in rushing touchdowns with 12 and was third in the league in rushing yards at 933. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry.

Robinson was the lone sophomore and among just two non-seniors on the first-team offense.

A junior, Schnell topped the Redbirds with 51 receptions for 679 yards. Kocour is a senior who finished his final season with 45 tackles and one interception for his second consecutive spot on the Valley's second team.

Helt is a senior who played center for ISU. Conley was credited with 40 tackles and four sacks as a senior. A junior, Petkovich caught 23 passes for 244 yards and one touchdown.

Fisher product Hans Carmien, a Southern Illinois fullback, also received honorable mention.
