NORMAL — A 31-14 loss to Western Illinois last Saturday pushed the Illinois State football team down five spots in one FCS national poll and seven places in another Monday.
The 6-3 Redbirds slipped from 12th to 17th in the STATS national rankings and from No. 13 to No. 20 in the FCS Coaches poll.
Both lists have a new second and third team after then-No. 2 North Dakota State's loss. James Madison continues to hold the top spot with Jacksonville State second and Central Arkansas third.
STATS rates North Dakota State fifth with South Dakota State sixth. The Jackrabbits advanced four spots with their win over NDSU.
South Dakota went from sixth to 19th after a defeat to Northern Iowa, which jumped back into the rankings at 25th. The victory over ISU boosted Western Illinois up to 11th from 15th a week ago.
The FCS Coaches have South Dakota State at No. 5 (up three places) surging ahead of No. 6 North Dakota State. South Dakota is No. 10 with Western Illinois ascending five rungs to No. 13.
ISU travels to South Dakota State on Saturday for a 2 p.m. Missouri Valley Football Conference game and closes the regular season at home Nov. 18 against North Dakota State.
