Sophomore Daniel Cole tied a school record with a 6-under par 65 Monday to help the Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team tie for third in the 12-team Gordin Collegiate Classic on Monday at the Delaware (Ohio) Golf Club.
Cole's round matched the school mark set by Drew Pershing last year at Oleander Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Ga.
IWU had a final-round 282 to finish with a 30-over par 882 (307-293-282), tied for third with Huntingdon College. Texas-Tyler won at 16-over 868.
Cole, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with a three-round score of 2-over 215 (75-75-65), trailing only medalist George Toone of Texas-Tyler at 211 and Sam Hill of Texas-Tyler at 214.
IWU freshman Rob Wuethrich tied for 10th with a 4-over 217 (75-71-71) and senior Conner O'Neil tied for 24th at 226 (78-74-74).
Hassan nets CCIW honor: IWU linebacker Jordan Hassan has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week. Hassan, a senior, helped the Titans to a 14-10 win over then-No. 5 Wheaton on Saturday with 14 tackles (six solo), three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack of minus-12 yards.
Men's golf leads at Firestone: The ISU men's golf team is in first place after Monday's opening 36 holes of the 16-team Firestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio.
The Redbirds had all four scorers in the top 10 en route to a two-round total of 564 and a five-shot lead over Akron heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Trent Wallace's 5-under 139 is good for fourth place, David Perkins is tied for fifth at 140 while Zach Burry and Andrew O'Brien share eighth place at 143.
Elliott Grayson of Akron and Austin Squires of Cincinnati sit atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under 136.
Women's golf tied for ninth: The Redbird women's golf team is tied for ninth after the first round of the 14-team Johnie Imes Invitational at Columbia, Mo.
ISU posted a team score of 302 led by Kiley Walsh, who is tied for 10th at even-par 72 going into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event.
Missouri leads the team competition at 288. Emma Allen of Missouri and Verena Gimmy of Missouri State head the medal chase at 4-under 68.
Jankiewicz repeats MVC award: For the second week in a row, ISU’s Stef Jankiewicz has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week. Jankiewicz, a setter, averaged 11.0 assists and 2.33 digs per set over three matches. She also had eight kills and three aces.
Eureka football duo honored: Junior running back LeAnthony Reasnover has been voted Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and senior defensive end Trever Zeibert has been selected UMAC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The duo paved the way for the Red Devils' 49-18 victory at Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday.
Reasnover tied a single-game Eureka record and also broke the program's career record for rushing touchdowns with six scores. Reasnover also increased his career rushing TD total to 36, breaking the previous Division III-era record of 34 set by Derrick Harris between 1991 and ’93.
Zeibert tallied 10 tackles, 5 tackles for loss and 2½ sacks against Iowa Wesleyan. His 24 career sacks are the most by a Red Devil since 2000 and his 34 career tackles for loss are second-most in the same time frame.
