The Illinois State women’s tennis team opened the Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships on Friday with a 4-0 first-round sweep of Northern Iowa at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
Phyllis Tigges and Madeliene Baillon extended their doubles winning streak to five matches with an 8-4 victory over Jieke Stroobant and Erica Medlin. Kadi Ilves and Ashton Nesbit defeated Krissy Lankelma and Jordyn Kearny by the same score to give the Redbirds (9-9) the point for doubles play.
Tigges, Sierra Stone and Ilves then won the three completed singles matches to seal the win for ISU. Tigges swept Stroobant, 6-3, 6-0; Stone topped Elvira Lopez, 6-4, 6-1; and Ilves surged past Sydney Wolfe, 6-1, 6-1.
“The wind can make things challenging, and if you don’t keep your cool, you can get a little flustered,” said ISU coach Chris Hoover. “But I think once we settled down, we were able to play really well. I think being at home has definitely helped us today too. We played well today in the matches that did finish, and even in the ones that went unfinished, I think we were playing well.”
The Redbirds advanced to face top-seeded Wichita State in a 10 a.m. match Saturday.
Men's tennis advances: Erik Brunskog and Urh Kranjnc Domiter posted wins in both singles and doubles play at the ISU men's tennis team defeated Bradley, 4-0, in first round play of the Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships on Friday at the Gregory Street Courts.
After defeating Arthur Romanet, 6-3, 6-3, Brunskog teamed with Rodrigo Oliviera for an 8-4 victory over Nico Rakitin and Dan Rodefeld. Kranjnc Domiter downed Hamish Weerasinghe, 6-2, 6-3, and then paired with Muddappa Appanervand for an 8-7 victory over Arthur Romanet and Justin Abrams.
ISU will meet Drake in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
