TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Thrower Brittany Smith had a day to remember for the Illinois State track team Saturday, notching a school record in the shot put and a lifetime best in the weight throw in a dual meet at Terre Haute, Ind.

The sophomore won the shot put with a heave of 53 feet, 11.75 inches, breaking the 2004 school record of 52-2.75 set by Latisha Johnson. Smith took second in the weight throw at 64-2.25.

“It is good to see her building off of a strong freshman season, and we expect her to continue to do well throughout the season,” said Coach Elvis Forde, whose men fell to Indiana State, 89-62, while the Redbird women lost, 83-68.

Other Illinois State winners were Amanda Albrecht in the high jump (5-7.25), Aisha Praught in the mile (5:06.00) and 3,000 (10:08.18), Alia McAfee in the 400 (57.53)

Illinois State men’s winners were Curtis Jensen in the shot put (53-0.75) and the 1,600 relay team (3:21.79) of Alex Roard, Yosef Tewolde, Fabian Norgrove and Mat Smoody.

The Redbirds return to action Jan. 22 in their own invitational.
