5 years ago (2004): Julie Kiska pitched a six-hit shutout to pace the Bloomington-Normal Girls Softball Association Extreme Motors Angels 18 and under travel team to a 1-0 victory over the Illinois Valley Mavericks in the State Farm Firecracker Tournament at Normal's Champion Fields.
15 years ago (1994): Dicky Thompson won the Hooters/Jordan Tour Ice Draft-WIHN Classic championship with a 15-under-par 269 at El Paso Country Club and earned $15,000. Thompson fired a 5-under 66 in the closing round.
25 years ago (1984): Rick Legner of Bloomington won the pole vault championship in the U.S. Team Committee World Games for the Deaf on the University of Texas campus. Legner cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to qualify for the International Deaf Olympics next summer in Los Angeles.
50 years ago (1959): Don Drane, the former BHS twirler, and Dave Knobloch, a newcomer from Armington, collaborated in a brilliant pitching performance to give the defending champion Russell Proctor team a 5-0 decision over Municipal League-leading Legion.
