High school volleyball roundup: BHS climbs to top of tourney

The Bloomington High School girls volleyball team, led by all-tournament honorees Lauren Seyller and Kasey Heckelman, won the gold division championship in the 16-team Mount Pulaski Festival Tournament Saturday.

BHS (11-3) topped Edwardsville in the final, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22. Earlier, the Purple Raiders downed Mount Pulaski, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17, and A-C Central, 25-18, 25-14. Heckelman had 47 kills in the tourney while Seyller had 42 and Alli Kirk had 51 digs.

"I thought we played well," said BHS coach Joe Sanders. "Edwardsville has some big kids and tremendous hitters. Hopefully, this will be a good springboard for us."

Mount Pulaski placed fourth in the gold division while Eureka was third in the silver division and Central Catholic (7-9) second in the bronze division.

Also on the 12-player all-tournament team were Mount Pulaski's Kassi Schmidt and Eureka's Kelsey Holman.

Normal West 5th at Maine East: Erin McGinnis had nine kills and 16 digs to lead the Wildcats in a 25-23, 25-19 victory over deLaSalle in the fifth-place match of the 15-team Demon Invitational at Maine East High School in Park Ridge.

Alexandra Aplington added 15 assists and 23 assists in a 20-25, 25-19, 25-14 loss to Stagg. McGinnis, Mellisa Turpin and Sara Motsinger all had five kills in that setback.

Applington had 10 service points and 15 assists in a 25-23, 25-16 victory over Regina Dominica while Turpin had seven kills and Shelby Seibring two block assists for the Wildcats (8-7).

Heyworth wins own tourney: Heyworth, led by all-tourney selections Dakota Springer and Alex Roberts, posted a perfect 5-0 record to win the Hornet Volleyball Invitational. The Hornets downed Lexington, who placed Erika Elisa on the all tourney team, 25-22, 24-26, 16-4 in the championship game.

Ridgeview 4th in PBL Tourney: Ridgeview (6-9) dropped a 25-15, 18-25, 15-12 decision to Rantoul in the third-place match of the PBL Tournament at Paxton where St. Joseph-Ogden was crowned champion.

Clinton (10-10) won the consolation title over PBL (2-9), 25-19, 26-24.
