BLOOMINGTON -- Bloomington held off Normal West, 48-40, Saturday in the Intercity Basketball Tournament at Shirk Center.
The Purple Raiders (3-1, 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference) led 11-5 after one quarter while forcing six West turnovers.
The Wildcats (2-1, 0-1) trailed 31-17 in the third quarter after BHS' Cole Jackson nailed a 3-pointer. West sliced its deficit to 34-30 by quarter's end.
But the Raiders opened the final period with baskets from Jackson and James Wimp and led by at least five the rest of the way.
"We were able to extend the lead and we didn't let them come and take the lead," BHS coach Peter Goff said. "We made layups and hit our free throws down the stretch."
Jackson scored 15 points and Wimp 11 for the Raiders.
"I thought we limited turnovers and boxed out well," said Jackson. "We did a good job guarding Brad Hallstein. We had to play good all four quarters."
Hallstein, West's 6-8 senior, scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Austin Stewart led the Wildcats to a 32-26 rebounding edge with nine boards.
"They got on us early," West coach Brian Cupples said. "I thought the kids really battled. We just got in a hole, and I think we were really pressing offensively."
The Wildcats shot just 33 percent overall (14 of 42) and 19 percent from 3-point range (3 of 16).
"We've got to get back to passing the basketball and screening for each other," said Cupples. "We were our own worst enemy. They do a good job, but I think it was our mistakes more than anything."
West faces NCHS at 6 p.m. on Monday.
A West victory would mean NCHS, West and BHS share the tournament crown.
