CHATHAM — Will Hanlon's half-court shot at the buzzer made the Chatham Glenwood High School basketball team a 38-36 winner over University High on Tuesday.
U High seemed to have the victory in hand when Nate Torres sank a 10-foot jumper with 1.5 seconds remaining to put the Pioneers on top 36-35. Glenwood inbounded the ball to half court and Hanlon scored while fading away from the basket.
"This felt exactly like our week nine football game against Chatham," said U High coach Andrew McDowell referring to an overtime loss.
Mark Widdel led the Pioneers (11-17, 7-10) with 17 points including 13 in the second half. Hanlon led Glenwood with 17.
U High shut out its host in the first quarter, 4-0, but trailed at halftime, 15-11.
"I am really excited and pleased with our defensive effort," McDowell said. "Shutting that team out (for a quarter) was a really great defensive effort for us. We took them out of all the sets they wanted to run. We struggled to score in the first half."
