SPRINGFIELD — The University High School basketball team was buried under a barrage of 3-pointers Friday night as Springfield Southeast defeated the Pioneers, 78-34, in a Central State Eight Conference game.
Class 3A No. 2-ranked Southeast drilled eight 3s in the first half with Kobe Medley contributing four in the first quarter to help the hosts to a 27-9 first-quarter lead and 53-16 halftime advantage.
"They got us out of our man-to-man defense and we didn't match up very well," said U High coach Andrew McDowell.
The game was starkly different from the teams' first meeting when U High led Southeast in the third quarter before falling by 11 points on Feb. 2 in Normal.
"Their point guard (Terrion Murdix) is back and they're coming off a huge win over (No. 4-ranked Springfield) Lanphier on Tuesday," McDowell said. They carried that momentum over to Senior Night tonight."
Anthony Fairlee led Southeast (23-2, 16-2) with 18 points while Medley contributed 17. The win secured a share of the Central State Eight championship for Southeast.
U High (11-18, 7-11) was led by Mark Widdel's 11 points.
