PEORIA — Andrew Morrissey finished with 29 points and 16 rebounds to spark No. 4-ranked Winnebago High School to a 67-63 victory over No. 3 Pinckneyville in a Class 2A State Tournament semifinal game Friday night at Carver Arena.
Winnebago (30-2) faces Chicago Orr in Saturday's championship game at 7:15 p.m., while Pinckneyville (31-4) meets Central Catholic in the 5:30 p.m. third-place game.
Morrissey, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound center headed for Northern Alabama, led Winnebago to third place in the State Farm Holiday Classic Small School Boys bracket in December.
Dawson Yates paced four Pinckneyville players in double figures with 16 points. Yates sank two free throws to cut Winnebago's lead to 64-63 with 18 seconds left.
Ty Waller followed with two free throws to give Winnebago a three-point lead with :16 seconds showing, but Pinckneyville couldn't get a tying 3-pointer to fall. Winnebago's Brennan Burkhart split a pair of free throws for the final margin.
Annawan 59, Newman 44: Owen Landwehr scored 19 points as No. 4-ranked Annawan never trailed in defeating No. 6 Sterling Newman Catholic in Friday's first semifinal game.
Ben Buresh added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the xx (31-3), who shot 62.1 percent from the field and sank 21 of 30 free throws. Newman (28-5) received 15 points from Devon House and 11 points from Travis Williams.
Okawville 48, Goreville 33: Payten Harre sank four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points to lead Okawville past Goreville in a semifinal between unranked teams.
Okawville (26-8), which was last year's Class 1A runner-up, received a double-double from Luke Hensler with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Goreville (23-12) shot 26.9 percent from the field and 1 of 17 outside the arc.
Goreville plays Sterling Newman at 11 a.m. Saturday in the third-place game followed by the 12:45 p.m. champiionship game pitting Annawan against Okawville.
