SPRINGFIELD — The University High School boys basketball team showcased its inside game Saturday in claiming a 65-45 win over Rochester in the Capital City Showcase at the Bank of Springfield Center.
The Pioneers netted 28 points in the paint in capturing a win in their inaugural appearance in the Central State Eight Conference.
"We want to establish ourselves as an inside-outside team and I'm very happy with our post play today," said U High coach Andrew McDowell, whose team was led by sophomore Alex Wood's game-high 24 points in improving to 2-3 overall.
Mark Widdel, a 6-foot-3 senior, and 6-3 junior Nate Torres both scored 10 points inside. Doug Holmes also reached double figures with 10.
"We came out and made some shots early," McDowell said of the Pioneers jumping out to a 14-5 first quarter lead.
U High led 30-16 at halftime before Widdel and Torres began to establish the inside game in the third period. The Pioneers entered the final frame with a 49-35 cushion before outscoring the Rockets 16-7 down the stretch.
Riley Rosche drilled six 3-pointers to lead Rochester with 18 points.
