Ridgeview High School's boys basketball team was ranked No. 1 Wednesday in the state's first Associated Press poll of the season.
The Mustangs (6-0) received five first-place votes and 90 points in voting by a statewide panel of sportswriters. Annawan (6-0) was second with three first-place votes and 84 points.
Ridgeview reached the Class 1A super-sectional last year and has been led this season by 6-foot-2 returning starter Jacob Donaldson. Donaldson had 21 points and 13 rebounds in Tuesday's win at Flanagan-Cornell.
Bloomington, which placed third in Class 3A last season, was ranked No. 7 in Class 4A. The 5-1 Purple Raiders received 31 points. Chicago Simeon was ranked No. 1 in 4A with 80 points.
BHS' only loss was a 72-68 setback Saturday at Hillcrest, the No. 5-ranked team in 3A. The Purple Raiders play host to Normal West on Friday.
Pantagraph area boys teams receiving votes but not making the top 10 were Lincoln, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Tremont, Heyworth and Mount Pulaski.
In the girls polls, Eureka (7-2) was ranked seventh in Class 2A with one first-place vote and 42 points. Harrisburg (8-0) took the top spot with 80 points.
Central Catholic (5-2) was ranked 10th in Class 3A with 11 points. Bethalto Civic Memorial (6-0) was rated No. 1.
Area girls teams receiving votes but not making the top 10 were Lincoln, Heyworth and Ridgeview.
