Led by individual champion Jack Franklin (14 minutes, 30 seconds), the University High School boys cross country team won the 14-team Charger Classic at Aurora on Saturday with 50 points, 27 better than runner-up Neuqua Valley.

Other Pioneer scorers were Jared Schuckman (3rd, 14:37), Harris Porter (13th, 15:06), Zach Wolford (14th, 15:08) and Tanner Gillam (19th, 15:23).

For the girls, U High freshman Katy Clausen won by three seconds in 17:27 to help her team finish second (78) behind Metea Valley (32). Advika Kamatar (9th, 18:04) also cracked the top 10 for U High.

Mahomet boys perfect: The No. 1 state-ranked Mahomet-Seymour boys posted a perfect score of 15 points while sweeping the top six places in the East Peoria Invitational. Normal West was third (120) and Bloomington fifth (185).

Andrew Walmer led the Bulldogs in first in 15:22. He was followed by teammates Gabe Pommier (15:27), Riley Fortune (15:35), Ryan Hodge (15:35), Brian Butcher (15:38) and Ben Craw (15:47).

For the girls, Mahomet-Seymour finished second (79) behind Dunlap (94). Eureka was fifth (174). Brisa McGrath (18:34) and Megan Churm (18:34) led Mahomet-Semour in fifth and sixth, respectively. Other top area individuals were Normal West's Mara Smith in ninth (18:48) and Eureka's Emma Argo in 12th (19:11).

Prairie Central girls 5th: The Prairie Central girls scored 107 points to finish fifth in the eight-team Herscher Invitational while the Prairie Central boys tallied 174 for sixth place. The top area individual for the girls was Fieldcrest's Claire Weers in 10th (21:06). Gardner-Dwight's Dan Muller led area boys in 16th (17:34).


U High rolls: Cayden Redd scored two goals, and Nathan Clay and J.D. Kelley each chipped in a goal and an assist, in U High's 5-1 win over United Township at Normal.

Mason Wittman opened the scoring for the Pioneers (8-2-4), who held a 3-0 lead at the half. U High outshot United, 12-5, with goalkeeper Christian Lopez forced to make only a single save in the win.

Normal West romps: Parker Theobald provided four goals and Jordan Walker four assists as Normal West (10-4-2) dominated host Metamora, 6-0. The Wildcats also received a goal from McCade Brown and scored on an own goal.

Matt Lage, Wade Anderson and Zach Bergeron also had assists for West, which outshot its host, 17-5.

NCHS blanked at Edwardsville: Outshot 10-4, Normal Community absorbed a 3-0 nonconference defeat at Edwardsville. Goalkeeper Austin Woodside made seven saves.

"The first half we played well with them," said Ironmen coach Matt Chapman, whose team slid to 6-1-5 while Edwardsville improved to 12-0-2. "The second half they turned it on and took control."

Cornerstone tumbles: Paul McBride's unassisted goal in the 30th minute wasn't enough as Cornerstone (14-2) lost to visiting Urbana Uni High, 2-1. Uni High (15-1) won the East Central Illinois Conference Touranment with a 4-0 record while the Cyclones fell to 2-1.

Paul D'Angelo and Rahi Miraftab-Salo scored for Uni High, fourth in last year's Class 1A state tournament. The victors outshot its host, 10-4. Cornerstone's Richard Phiri had eight saves.

Central ties: Central Catholic's Noah Bevilacqua scored a hat trick but a Rock Island Alleman goal on a penalty kick with 56 seconds remaining in the game resulted in a 3-3 tie at Sale Barn Field.

Alleman led 2-1 at halftime and outshot Central 13-8. J.C. Micklich had 12 saves for the Saints (1-13-1).


NCHS 2nd at Pekin: Normal Community shot 343 to finish one stroke behind champion O'Fallon in the 17-team Lady Dragon Classic at Pekin. Jenna DeMay and Savannah Weyrauch tied for fifth after shooting 84 for the Ironmen.

Fourth-placer Maddison Murphy (83) led area finishers and helped University High finish fifth (367). Eureka was seventh (381), Central Catholic 10th (393) and Normal West 12th (409).


Saints place third: Central Catholic's No. 2 team of Maggie Kuntz and Rachel McBeath took second as the Saints finished third in the eight-team Chargers Doubles Invitational at Champaign.

Naperville Central took the title with 26 points, while Downers Grove South had 15 and Central Catholic 12.


Prairie Central takes 2nd: Olivia Webber and Kylie Vogel of Prairie Central were named to the Watseka Invitational all-tournament team after the Hawks placed second to the host Warriors.

Prairie Central went 3-0 in pool play, sweeping Peotone and Hoopeston Area before topping Gardner in three sets. In the championship match, Watseka outlasted the Hawks, 21-25, 25-19, 15-7.

Tri-Point dropped three two-set pool matches, falling to Watseka, Salt Fork and Danville. Kassidi Burton led the Chargers with 23 kills and 19 digs and Paisley Johnston totaled 18 assists.

Reed-Custer Tournament: Streator dropped a pair of championship bracket matches at the Reed-Custer tournament in Braidwood. The Bulldogs fell to Tinley Park, 25-14, 25-15, before being eliminated by the host school, 25-21, 25-19.

Streator was led by Lakia Glenn with 28 kills and six blocks, Maggie McGurk with 40 assists and Delanie Johnson with 31 digs and seven aces.

Cissna Park finished fifth, defeating Seneca, 25-23, 25-18, and Mendota, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12 before being eliminated.

The Timberwolves were led by Gabby Wessels with 33 kills and 34 digs, Anna Jennings with 91 assists and Bailey Downs with 36 digs.
