Big 12 volleyball

Rachel Maguire recorded seven kills and 11 assists Tuesday as the Normal Community High School volleyball team earned a 25-20, 25-21 Big 12 Conference victory over Champaign Central at Champaign.

Grace Cleveland added six kills and two blocks and Peyton Kelley had eight digs for the Iron, who improved to 18-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

BHS downs Peoria High: Ezri Edwards had nine kills and Corinna Jones collected 15 assists for Bloomington in a 25-13, 25-15 Big 12 win over Peoria High at the Robert Frank Sports Complex.

Grace Sanders totaled nine digs for the Purple Raiders (19-6, 7-0).

Saints defeat Mahomet: Maddie Malinowski led with eight kills, nine service points and three aces as Central Catholic defeated Mahomet-Seymour 25-15, 25-20 in Corn Belt Conference play at Cvengros Gymnasim.

Maddie Holt added 23 assists and Erika Moore 15 digs for the Saints (18-4, 7-0). Kate Hoerdemann contributed six kills and 13 digs. Savannah Matthews had 10 kills and 14 assists for Mahomet-Seymour with Elizabeth Sproat adding 10 digs.

West falls at Centennial: Normal West fell to 11-8 and 4-2 in the Big 12 after absorbing a 25-23, 25-19 Big 12 loss at Champaign Centennial. Jamie Rys had seven kills for the Wildcats, who also received 10 assists from Kayla Johnson and 11 digs from Carly Goben.

U High tops Pontiac: Illyana Lin led the way with six kills for University High in a 25-13, 25-12 win at Pontiac. Hannah Lane had six assists and Abbie Seward had six digs. Madison Wright had two kills, six digs, a block and an ace for Pontiac.

Eureka sweeps Dee-Mack: Lauren Rokey totaled 13 kills and Maddie McCunn racked up 21 assists as Eureka notched a 25-14, 25-16 win over Deer Creek-Mackinaw in a matchup of teams previously unbeaten in Heart of Illinois Conference play at Mackinaw.

Courtney Heffren added eight digs and Hailey Flowers had two aces and two blocks for the Hornets (23-3, 10-0 HOIC). Dee-Mack (16-4, 9-1) was led by Chelsea Pawlak's eight digs, Caitlynn Whitaker's 10 assists and Maranda Schaley's four kills.

Lexington tops GCMS: Haley Thomas contributed six kills and Raelyn Payne 10 digs as host Lexington claimed a 25-7, 25-21 victory over HOIC foe GCMS. Emma White dished out 12 assists for the Minutemen (13-9, 5-6). Jessalyn Davis had six digs for GCMS.

Tri-Valley triumphs: Natalie Tagala's supplied 17 assists and Hannah Clayton grabbed eight for kills as Tri-Valley (21-2, 9-1) defeated El Paso Gridley 25-18, 25-12 in a HOIC contest El Paso. Gracie Feeney led EPG (13-7, 5-5) with 11 assists.

Tremont tips Fisher: Violet Thompson had seven kills, five aces and 20 assists to lead Tremont to a 25-8, 16-25, 25-21 HOIC victory over Fisher at Tremont. Lorena Falcon had 10 digs for the Turks (8-9, 4-4). Lydia Spraul had seven kills and Rebecca Clanton 14 digs for the Bunnies (7-3, 1-9).

Fieldcrest edges Blue Ridge: Emma Fortner had 21 assists and 10 digs for Fieldcrest in a 25-19, 25-21 HOIC win over Blue Ridge at Farmer City. Emma Petersen added nine kills for Fieldcrest.

Flanagan-Cornell bests Ridgeview: Liberty Vollmer's 13 assists and the eight kills of Samantha Lyons led Flanagan-Cornell to a 25-18, 25-19 victory over Ridgeview at Flanagan. Vollmer also had three digs for the Falcons (10-11-1, 3-7). River Rosales had 14 digs for Ridgeview with Carley Zimmerman contributing four kills and eight service points.

PBL tips Dwight: Lucy Rieke had eight kills and Karah Colebank 21 assists, but Dwight fell to PBL, 25-19, 23-25, 25-15 in a Sangamon Valley match at Dwight. Brooke Bossert and Megan VanAmburgh each had nine digs for the Trojans.

Deland-Weldon wins: Raeanne Allen had 15 kills and five blocks and Chloe Melvin dished out 33 assists as Deland-Weldon defeated Decatur Christian, 25-13, 24-26, 25-17 at Deland. Haley Reynolds and Hannah Cunningham contributed 11 and 10 blocks respectively for Deland.

Mount Pulaski wins: Skylar Hayes had eight kills, Alexandra Beckers 12 assists and Abigail Fitzpatrick 19 digs as Mount Pulaski defeated Delavan, 25-13, 25-19 at Mount Pulaski. Katlyn Arrenholz had 13 assists for Delavan.

Lincoln victorious: Mackenzie Antoine had five aces and 13 digs while Emma O'Donoghue chipped in 12 assists to help Lincoln secure a 25-17, 25-18 Central State Eight decision over host Springfield Lanphier.

Streator wins: Streator topped Reed Custer, 25-21, 25-20 on the strength of eight kills and three blocks by Lakia Glenn and 12 assists from Maggie McGurk. Delanie Johnson had 16 digs for the visiting Bulldogs.

Tri-Point loses: Kassidi Burton's 13 kills and 15 digs led Tri-Point, but the Chargers dropped a 28-26, 16-25, 25-14 decision to St. Anne at Cullom.

Cornerstone defeated: Arthur Okaw Christian claimed a 25-4, 25-10 victory over Cornerstone Christian at Bloomington. No other details were available

BOYS SOCCER

West edges BHS: Jordan Walker's first-half goal was all Normal West would need in a 1-0 Big 12 win over Intercity rival Bloomington at Community Fields.

Walker scored with two minutes remaining in the half with an assist from Parker Theobald. His goal came on the heels of a one-on-one point-blank save by West goalkeeper McCade Brown to preserve the shutout for the Wildcats (13-4-2, 6-1).

Powers, NCHS topple Centennial: Ryan Powers had two goals and assisted on a third as Normal Community scored a 4-2 Big 12 win at Champaign Centennial.

Powers' goals staked the Ironmen to a 2-0 halftime lead before Griffin Bruso and Brady Fletcher finished the scoring for the Ironmen (10-3-5, 6-0-2). Josef Halcomb, Josh King-Nobles, Bruso and freshman Michael Reibling joined Powers in adding assists for NCHS. Goalkeeper Austin Woodside had two saves.

PND clips U High: University High took a 2-1 halftime lead on goals from Jett Jenkins and Brian Cordero before Peoria Notre Dame rallied for a 3-2 nonconference win at Normal.

J.D. Kelley assisted Cordero's goal for the Pioneers (9-4-5), who got three saves from keeper Christian Lopez. The Irish tied it four minutes into the second half before Myles Sophanavong netted the winner with 13 minutes remaining.

Saints fall at home: Williamsville built a four-goal lead by halftime and defeated Central Catholic 5-0 at Sale Barn Field. The Saints 1-15-2) were outshot, 20-14.

Cornerstone rolls: Moses Kabuswe scored a hat trick in leading Cornerstone to a 6-0 nonconference win over Athens on the Cyclones' senior night at the Corn Crib.

Paul McBride added a goal and two assists while James McBride Richard Phiri each had a tally and a helper for Cornerstone. Phiri started at keeper and made three saves before Isaac Garey spelled him for the final 13 minutes.

CROSS COUNTRY

U High teams sweep: University High's Zach Wolford (16:06) won the 12-team U High Invitational at Normal's Maxwell Park and teammate Josh Nepomuceno (16:10) was runner-up as the host Pioneers snatched the meet title with 21 points. Dane Alexander (16:34), Jackson McClure (16:37), Sean Supan (16:46) and Alok Kamatar (17:00) all placed in the top 10 for U High. Billy Wetzel (17:34) paced Normal West to second place with 93 points, while Drew Guimond (17:10) boosted Tri-Valley to third place.

On the girls side, Katy Clausen placed first in 18:20 to lead U High to the title with 28 points. The Pioneers' Advika Kamatar claimed the runner-up spot (19:09), with teammates Ally Shepherd (19:38) and Tasha Schuckman (20:04) also in the top 10. Mahomet-Seymour was second (37) with Brisa McGrath (19:23) placing third to lead a quartet of Bulldogs in the top 10.
