The Normal Community High School boys golf team won the 14-team Unit 5 Better Ball Tournament by seven strokes with a score of 211 on Saturday.
The Ironmen were paced by the winning duo of Tyler Kanski and Rob Wuethrich, who shot 64. Kanski aced the 313-yard, par-4 eighth hole at Ironwood Golf Course.
Fourth-place Normal West (220) was led by Evan Hudson and Michael Moser, who tied for fifth at 70. Bloomington placed 11th (240).
NCHS girls 3rd: The Normal Community girls shot 332 to finish third in the 14-team John Macek Invitational on the U of I Orange Course at Savoy.
New Trier won with 323. Normal West finished 11th (415) followed by Lincoln (430) and Bloomington (444).
Allison Enchelmayer of NCHS led area individuals by tying for ninth with an 80. Teammate Claire Crabill tied for 11th at 81.
U High boys, girls 3rd: The No. 2-state ranked University High boys placed third in the 37-team Class 3A division of the Peoria Invitational, scoring 174 points. Jack Franklin led the Pioneers in fifth with a school record time of 14:31 on the 3-mile Detweiller Park course. Teammate Jared Schuckman was 10th (14:52) followed by Harris Porter (37th, 15:25) and Zach Wolford (39th, 15:26).
In the 30-team Class 1A-2A girls division, U High was third (171) as freshman Katy Clausen finished seventh in 18:00 and Advika Kamatar was 20th in 18:45. In the 1A-2A boys race, Bloomington was 14th (375) as Nick Doud placed 20th in 15:35.
Schlenker, Eureka triumph: The Eureka girls scored 75 points to win the 20-team Elmwood Invitational ahead of El Paso-Gridley (118) and Deer Creek-Mackinaw (124). Third-placer Emma Argo (18:53) led Eureka while fifth-placer Abby Lewis (19:04) helped Central Catholic place ninth (233). Cate Atkins was seventh (19:06) for EPG.
Other Eureka scorers were Tessa Wiegand (10th, 19:45), Lexi Grober (18th, 20:22), Natalie Bardwell (20th, 20:27) and Kaitlyn Sapp (26th, 20:55).
In the 16-team boys race, Central Catholic's Adam Schlenker won by 14 seconds in 15:52 to help his team finish sixth (145). Elmwood (65), Deer Creek-Mackinaw (96) and Eureka (104) swept the top three places. Dee-Mack's Dakota Myers was sixth (16:17), Tremont's Leland Sumer seventh (16:23) and Central Catholic's Will Dionesotes eighth (16:26).
Galloway, PBL win: Northern Illinois recruit Daly Galloway of Gardner-Dwight won the Twin Valley Conference Meet at Clifton in 18:41 while PBL swept the boys and girls team titles. The Panther boys scored 42 points while the PBL girls tallied 44. Galloway won the girls title by 91 seconds.
Kody Harrison led the PBL boys, placing second in 17:13. Dan Muller paced Gardner-Dwight in sixth (17:56).
NCHS second: Julia Oostman won the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.73) and Julia Heimstead captured the 100 butterfly (58.49) to help Normal Community finish second (344) in the 14-team Richwoods Midwest Invitational at Peoria. Dunlap won with 516.5.
Third-place University High (334) received runner-up finishes from its 200 medley relay (1:55.50), 400 freestyle relay (3:14.15) and Lilly Culp in the 100 backstroke (1:01.30). Metamora co-op's Noelle Peplowski set pool and meet records with wins in the 500 freestyle (4:57.23) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.12) as the co-op finished fourth. Normal West was ninth.
BHS seventh: Macy Rink paced seventh-place Bloomington with a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:19.77) at the eight-team Downers Grove South Invitational. Teammate Jordan Peterson was third in the 200 freestyle (2:01.87) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:29.48). Metea Valley won 493.5 points.
NCHS wins two of three: Normal Community defeated Breese Central and Breese Mater Dei before falling to O'Fallon and finishing eighth in the 18-team Belleville East Tournament at Belleville.
Southern Illinois recruit Rachel Maguire was named to the all-tournament team after the Iron (17-3) posted a 25-14, 25-13 win over Breese Central and defeated Mater Dei, 25-21, 25-23. NCHS closed the day with a 25-14, 25-22 loss to O'Fallon.
Maguire led the Iron with 17 kills while Jamie Vasilou added 27 assists and three aces. Peyton Kelley contributed 24 digs.
Skylar Hayes had 37 kills, but couldn't prevent Mount Pulaski from dropping five matches. Alexandra Beckers had a team-high 44 assists as the Toppers lost to Belleville West, Cor Jesu, Belleville East, Champaign Centennial and Gibault. Abigail Fitzpatrick added 38 digs.
Dee-Mack 4th at Pekin: Deer Creek-Mackinaw (16-3) went 2-3 to finish fourth in the Pekin Tournament. The Chiefs' Carson Smalley (39 kills) and Caitlynn Whitaker (82 assists) made the all-tournament team. Chelsea Pawlak added 41 digs for Dee-Mack while Ashley Melton had eight blocks.
Dee-Mack defeated IVC and Peoria Notre Dame, but lost to eventual champion Pekin, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin and Augusta Southeastern.
Also making the all-tournament team were Eureka's Lauren Rokey and Olympia's Emma Olson.
Eureka (22-3) topped Olympia and Peoria Notre Dame and lost to Augusta Southeastern and Sacred Heart-Griffin. Olympia also lost to Sacred Heart-Griffin, IVC and Augusta Southeastern.
Clinton 1-3 at Riverton: Madi Filkin had 23 kills for Clinton during a 1-3 showing in the Riverton Tournament. Lexi Peterson chipped in four aces for the Maroons, who topped Nokomis, but lost to Riverton, Mount Zion and Auburn.
Iroquois West wins: Grace Schroeder had seven kills, eight service points and one block for Iroquois West (7-13) in a 25-17, 25-9 win over Hoopeston Area at Gilman. Macy Tippie had 2 digs for the Raiders and Rachel Carney had eight assists.
NCHS splits: In the Gateway City Soccer Classic at St. Louis, Normal Community bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Francis Powell Central of St. Charles, Mo., to defeat Rock Island, 2-0.
In the win, Josef Halcomb scored off a Griffin Bruso assist for NCHS (9-3-5) and Cooper Zogg headed in a cornerkick from Josh King-Nobles. Austin Woodside made 10 saves as the Ironmen were outshot, 12-10.
In its loss, NCHS was outshot, 10-6.
Cornerstone ties Fisher-GCMS: Cornerstone and Fisher-GCMS tied, 2-2, at Fisher. The hosts (10-7-2) received two goals from Caleb Bleich and an assist from Caleb Pulley.
Moses Kabuswe and Paul McBride scored for Cornerstone (15-2-1), which received assists from Paul McBride and James McBride. The Cyclones were outshot, 5-3. Richard Phiri made three saves in goal for Cornerstone while Ethan Kasper had one save for Fisher-GCMS.
Blue Ridge falls: Dupo (1-5) handed Blue Ridge a 41-6 loss at Farmer City. It was the third straight loss without a win for the Knights.
