CHAMPAIGN -- Brandon Pechloff hit Christian Westerkamp with a 12-yard pass and then a two-point conversion with 32 seconds left to give Montini a 29-28 victory Saturday over Joliet Catholic Academy to win the Class 5A state championship at Memorial Stadium.

"We have like 12 two-point conversion plays we practice," Pechloff said. "We lined up for an extra point to try to draw them offside. Then we called a time-out and knew we were going for two."

Lombard's Montini (10-4) became just the second team in state history to win a football title with four losses. Last year, Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst was the first when they won an Illinois High School Association Class 2A crown.

It was the Broncos' second football state title.

Pechloff threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns and Nick Campanella ran for 117 yards. Ryan Gorrel ran for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

The game at Memorial Stadium featured seven turnovers, including six in the first half.

Joliet Catholic, which has 13 state titles, finished 11-3.

Joliet had three runners -- Malin Jones, Jordan Lyles and Josh Ferguson -- eclipse the 100-yard mark but they failed to complete any passes in eight attempts.

"It was a heck of a game," Joliet coach Dan Sharp said. "The ball wasn't bouncing our way, but it all came down to a two-point conversion."

Cary-Grove 34, Providence Catholic 17: Alex Hembry ran for 187 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns to lead Cary-Grove to a 34-17 victory over Providence Catholic in the Illinois High School Association Class 6A state championship football game.

The win gives Cary-Grove (14-0) its first state football title.

The Trojans totaled 414 yards thanks to Hembry, Tyler Krebs (77 yards running, 48 yards passing) and Stephen Hapanovich (72 yards running).

Providence, which was seeking its 10th state title, fell to 12-2. Quarterback Joey Houlihan threw for 124 yards and running back Tim Hanrahan ran for 73.

Wheaton Warrenville South wins thriller in 2 OTs: Matthew Rogers' 1-yard plunge in the second overtime helped Wheaton Warrenville South knock off Glenbard West 31-24 to win the Illinois High School Association Class 7A title.

The teams met Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Wheaton (13-1) won its sixth state title.

Wheaton's Nicholas Immeku set a Class 7A state title game record when he booted a 47-yard field goal to knot the game at 10-10 with 5:09 left in the third. Quarterback Reilly O'Toole threw for 129 yards.

Adam Bruere scored two touchdowns for Glenbard West (13-1).

Maine South 41, Marist 17: Matt Perez set a state championship game record with 316 yards and scored five touchdowns to help Maine South win its second straight Illinois High School Association Class 8A title with a 41-17 victory over Marist Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

The previous mark was a 308-yard effort by Seneca

s Paul Bauer in the Class 2A title game in 1990. The previous best rushing game in an 8A title game was when Maine South's Charlie Goro ran for 164 yards last year.

The Hawks (14-0) own a 28-game winning streak and have four state titles.

For Marist (11-3) quarterback Mike Perish threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted three times.
