BLOOMINGTON -- The Illinois High School Association will adopt a new rule that will force a football player to sit out one play if their helmet comes off during a live play regardless of contact.

The rule set by the National Federation of State High School Associations will be implemented for the 2012 season.

The NFHS football rules committee reviewed data from multiple states regarding frequency of helmets coming off during play.

The committee said it sought to force schools to properly fit players' helmets and remind players to not alter the way a helmet fits.
