DEKALB — Rahveon Valentine ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns Friday as Lena-Winslow High School held off Tuscola, 21-20, in the Class 1A state championship football game at Huskie Stadium.
Valentine scored on runs of 76 and 22 yards in the second quarter to give Lena-Winslow (14-0) a 21-7 lead. Tuscola (13-1) pulled within 21-20 in the third quarter on two TD passes by Luke Sluder. However, an attempted two-point conversion run following the second of those scores was unsuccessful.
Sluder was 12 of 32 passing for 116 yards and the two TDs with one interception. Lena-Winslow's Ty Chrisman completed 2 of 5 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Andrew Erickson led Tuscola's ground attack with 73 yards on 12 carries, including a 5-yard scoring run.
IC Catholic 35, Pleasant Plains 0: Lazerick Eatman rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns to power defending champion IC Catholic to the Class 3A title over Pleasant Plains.
Eatman had TD runs of 1, 1, 15 and 9 yards among his 24 carries. He led IC Catholic (13-1) to 359 yards of total offense compared to 155 for Pleasant Plains (10-4).
IC Catholic quarterback CJ West was 9 of 11 passing for 110 yards. Pleasant Plains received 108 yards rushing on 20 carries from Nik Samson.
Kemon Reese had 11 tackles to lead the IC Catholic defense.
The Class 4A title game between Rochester and Morris was still in progress at Pantagraph press time.
