PEORIA — The Peoria Notre Dame High School soccer team snapped a 1-1 tie with 15 minutes remaining and defeated University High, 3-1, in a semifinal of the Class 2A Notre Dame Sectional on Wednesday.
"It was a great game. For the most part, it was a pretty even game," Pioneers coach Jeremy Stanton said. "I thought we outplayed them the first half, and I thought they outplayed us the second half."
U High bowed out with a 20-7 record. The 19-4 Irish will face Quincy Notre Dame for the sectional championship Friday at 7 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame recorded the initial goal 10 minutes into the second half.
J.D. Kelley lifted U High into a tie about 10 minutes later with an unassisted goal.
"They played it back to the goalkeeper," Stanton said. "J.D. stayed with it and got there before the keeper and poked it in."
The Irish took the lead on a corner kick that Stanton called "a scramble situation in the box and one of their guys knocked it in."
Quincy Notre Dame blanked Dunlap, 7-0, in the other sectional semifinal.
