WINNETKA — Even though Lindsay Gendron had swum in many big meets in her young career, Saturday’s state swim meet finals at New Trier High School was a new experience for the senior.

Gendron handled the experience with ease as the Normal Community High School swimmer captured a state title in the 100-yard freestyle and added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley with season-best and school-record times.

U High’s Emily Hovren wasn’t far behind, finishing fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 freestyle, while Samantha Holmes finished eighth in the 500 freestyle for Normal West.

“It was really intense, but I felt really good in the water and swam as fast as I could,” Gendron said. “I’ve never swam in front of that many spectators before. It felt like they were almost right on deck.”

The University of Tennessee recruit bettered Friday’s 50.68-second prelim in the 100 freestyle with a 50.54, the second best time in Pantagraph area history behind Monica Drake’s 50.14, to defeat New Trier’s Maddy Urban (51.50). Hovren, a University of Iowa signee, went 52.18 to take fifth.

Gendron took almost a full second off her prelim mark of 2:04.87 in the 200 IM with a 2:04.17 to finish second to Aurora Rosary’s Olivia Scott (2:01.64). The mark ranks as the area’s bes all-timet, topping her own 2:04.31. Hovren finished fourth with a time of 2:07.08.

“Lindsay was very pleased with her performance, as was I,” said Normal Community coach Heather Budak. “It was a brand new experience for her, but she was very competitive and handled it well. It was a really good day.”

U High coach Ryan Burroughs was pleased with Hovren’s efforts.

“All of downstate was represented really well,” he said. “We tried to swim the IM differently. We went out more aggressively. We probably ended up going out too aggressively, but in the state final, you’ve got to go out and get after it. Emily moved up a place in the 100 free, so that was fun. She is very happy with how she did.”

Holmes dropped more than two seconds from Friday’s prelim finish of 5:03.84 to move up a spot to eighth in the 500 freestyle consolation finals with a time of 5:01.42. Her time was the sixth-best on the day and No. 5 in area history, topping two finishes in the finals race.

The Ironmen finished 14th in the team standings with 29 points while the Pioneers were 19th with 21 points. Normal West was 35th with five points.
