EVANSTON — Pontiac High School senior Brett Spires trimmed six-tenths of a second off his personal best in the 100-yard backstroke Saturday to place fourth and top Pantagraph area participants in the finals of the 88th Boys State Swim Meet at Evanston High School.
Spires, who set his previous top time while qualifying third Friday, clocked 49.58 seconds in the finals. The Michigan State recruit placed behind LaGrange Lyons senior Spencer Walker (48.11), New Trier senior Patrick Gridley (49.08) and Byron senior Caleb Carlson (49.15).
Alabama-bound University High senior Colton Stogner took sixth in the 50 freestyle (21.16) and ninth in the 100 freestyle (46.68). The Pioneers' 200 medley relay squad of Andy Ritsema, Harrison Fudge, Stogner and Anthony Williamson also placed ninth (1:35.35).
Justin Alderson of the Metamora co-op placed eighth in the individual medley (1:52.3) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (57.41).
U High was 17th in the team standings with 21 points. New Trier won the title at 161, topping two-time defending champion LaGrange Lyons (150.5).
NCHS 3rd in combined results: Normal Community senior Trevor Tucci had three wins and a runner-up finish in events for athletes with disabilities, helping the Ironmen claim a third-place trophy in the new combined team results.
Tucci captured the 200 freestyle in 2:47.99, the 100 freestyle in 1:20.17 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:52.92 to go with a second-place time of 37.62 in the 50 freestyle.
NCHS, which had Thomas Reedy (100 breastsroke) and Ethan Lowder (50 freestyle) compete but not place in regulation events, came in behind Evanston and Brother Rice in the competition among teams with athletes competing in both regulation and AWD races.
