LeRoy’s Bulington,
Conaty earn titles
at wrestling invite

Trevor Bulington and Jacob Conaty won their weight classes Saturday to help host LeRoy High School place third in the 16-team Bowman Invitational wrestling tournament.

Bulington won the 152-pound bracket with a 7-0 decision over Monticello's Kaehl Van Dalsen. Conaty topped the field at 160, pinning Princeville's Peyton Hammerich in 4:45. The Panthers also got a second place from Alex LaMont at 220 and totaled 136 points to place behind Carbondale (145.5) and Oregon (142).

El Paso-Gridley (115.5) finished sixth as Jaime Gregory won by injury default at 106 and Dylan Reeves earned a 2-1 decision over Carbondale's Jamonte Rush at 170. The Titans also had Monte Gregory (113) and Kain Jackson (132) place second.

Tremont tied for seventh at 99.5 and Eureka was ninth at 99 with runner-up finishes from Asher Wiegand (120) and Nick Wells (182). Eleventh-place Deer Creek-Mackinaw (76.5) got a second place from Trace Thomas (126).

Goplin keys Streator: Jayson Goplin won the Interstate Eight Conference title at 220 for a second straight year to help Streator place third in the league meet at Wilmington.

Goplin received a 16-0 technical fall victory over Wilmington's Sam Jones. The Bulldogs got runner-up finishes from TJ Moran at 132 and Isiah Dukes at 285 and finished with 118.5 points to place behind Coal City (225.5) and Wilmington (199).

BOYS SWIMMING

Woith wins for NCHS: Senior Andrew Woith won the 500-yard freestyle to lead Normal Community in the Panther Invitational at East Moline. Woith's winning time of 4 minutes, 59.26 seconds led NCHS to 154 points, good for fifth place out of 11 teams. Woith also was second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.34).

Spires sets Pontiac records: Pontiac's Brett Spires set school records in the 100-yard butterfly (55.94), 100 backstroke (53.24) and 200 freestyle (1:50.59) while winning the Pentathlon Meet individual title at Ottawa. The Indians had 14,139 points as a team to place second behind the LaSalle-Peru coop (15,159).

COMPETITIVE DANCE

U High, West earn state berths: University High qualified for state in Class 1A and Normal West advanced in Class 2A at the Mahomet-Seymour Competitive Dance Sectional.

U High took the final qualifying spot for next weekend's State Finals at Bloomington's U.S. Cellular Coliseum with a sixth-place score of 81.17. Streator also qualified in 1A, placing fifth with an 81.30 total.

Normal West advanced by taking fifth in 2A with an 81.00. Bloomington was 10th in 2A (75.57) and Normal Community was eighth in 3A (89.67).

CHEERLEADING

BHS wins Big 12: Bloomington captured the Big 12 Conference cheerleading championship at Normal West. The Purple Raiders had 83.69 points while runner-up Normal Community finished with 79.25. Normal West took fourth (75.40).
