INDIANAPOLIS — Normal Community High School student Grace Ariola helped the USA mixed 400-meter medley relay win the silver medal in the 6th FINA World Junior Championships on Thursday. She also finished sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Ariola anchored the relay to a time of 3 minutes, 46.80 seconds in a personal best 100 freestyle split of 54.77. Her relay teammates were Regan Smith, Reece Whitley and Nicolas Albiero. Canada won in 3:46.36.

A University of Texas recruit, Ariola posted a 100 backstroke time of 1:00.58. Fellow American Megan Smith won in 59.11. 

Earlier, Ariola advanced eighth among 85 entrants in the 100 freestyle prelims in 55.70. She then clocked 55.08 in the semifinals to advance sixth to Friday's eight-woman final. The top semifinal time was 54.06 by Japan's Rikako Ikee.

Ariola will also take part in the USA 400 freestyle relay on Friday.
