INDIANAPOLIS — Grace Ariola, a Normal Community High School student, won the bronze medal in Sunday's final of the 50-meter backstroke at the 6th FINA World Junior Championships.
A University of Texas recruit, Ariola clocked a time of 28.11 seconds to finish third behind Natsumi Sakai of Japan and Siena Hannah of Canada. who tied for the gold at 27.93.
Ariola also captured her third relay silver medal of the meet by anchoring the second-place 400 freestyle relay. Her time of 54.28 seconds helped the team to a 3:39.69 clocking. Canada won in 3:36.19.
Ariola posted a 24.87 to win her heat and place second overall in the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle. Top qualifier was Rikako Ikee of Japan with a time of 24.74. The final will be contested on Monday.
