Stewardson-Strasburg-Windsor standouts Megan Schlechte and Makenzie Taggert set state finals standards in leading the Hatchets to a record-setting, 27-25, 24-26, 25-19 win over Durand in the semifinals of the Class 1A state volleyball tournament on Friday at Redbird Arena.
Schlechte recorded 29 kills to eclipse the previous mark of 27 set by Lanark-Eastland's Makenzie Fink in a semifinal win over Stewardson-Strasburg-Windsor a year ago. Schlechte's record stands as the most in a single match in any of the four tournament classes.
The Hatchets had 55 kills as a team, a new state record. With Durand scoring 32 kills, the two teams combined for a new state mark of 87 kills in a match.
Tabbert was credited with 48 assists, bettering the previous Class 1A mark of 44 set by A-C Central's Brittany Stribling in 2008. The Hatchets also set the team mark with 52. With the addition of the 31 assists by Durand, including 28 from Marissa Kelsey, a new record of 83 was established for assists in a single match.
Stewardson-Strasburg-Windsor (34-6) advances to face Payson Seymour (40-1) in Saturday morning's Class 1A title match. Payson Seymour defeated Newark, 25-21, 25-13 in Friday's opening match behind the 12 kills of Kamryn Flesner and 26 assists of Cassie Eidson.
Champaign St. Thomas More and Quincy Notre Dame will meet for the Class 2A title on Saturday.
St. Thomas More (37-3) defeated Elgin Harvest Christian Academy, 25-8, 25-21 after Quincy Notre Dame (33-8) had disposed of Newton, 25-19, 28-26.
Hannah Peters had 19 digs for Notre Dame, which survived nine ties and four lead changes in the second set to claim the victory.
Chicago Resurrection and Arlington Heights St. Viator broke the Class 3A record for most poins scored for both teams in a match in Resurrection's 30-32, 25-23, 25-18 win in a Class 3A semifinal.
Brittany Welch had 18 kills for Resurrection with Christina Gatta contributing 39 assists and 20 digs. Catherin Hickey had a double-double for St. Viator with 14 kills and 18 digs. Michasela Mueller added 32 assists.
Resurrection advances to face Belleville Althoff in Saturday's championship game.
Minooka (39-2) and Chicago Marist (40-1) will play for the Class 4A title on Saturday night.
Minooka received 12 kills from Raquel Perinar and 22 assists from Zoey Seput in a 25-20, 25-12 win over St. Charles North.
Marist breezed to a 25-14, 25-22 win over Crystal Lake Central behind the nine kills of Savannah Thompson and 20 assists of Molly Murrihy. Grace Green added 11 digs.
