FYI: Newark is making its first state finals appearance after defeating Lexington in the super-sectional. Freshman sensation Madi Malone is averaging just over 12 kills per match and had 18 against Lexington...Payson Seymour is making its third state trip and first since placing fourth in 2009. Junior setter Cassie Eidson has 912 assists (22.8 per outing). Senior middle blocker Josie Stanford has contributed 391 kills and 67 aces...Durand had to knock off the last three Class 1A state champions to qualify for its inaugural finals appearance. The Bulldogs defeated Lanark Eastland (2015) and Rockford Keith Country Day (2014) to win the sectional before disposing of defending champ Sciota West Prairie in the super-sectional. Junior outside hitter McKenzie Damon leads Durand with 301 kills and 222 digs. Senior middle blocker Kaite Asche has added 299 kills and 100 blocks...Stewardson-Strasburg, which co-ops with Windsor, hopes to improve on last year's third-place finish in its third finals appearance in five years. The Hatchets finished second in 2013. Junior outside hitter Megan Schlechte leads Stew-Stras with 490 kills and also has 303 digs.

FYI: Newton returns to the state finals for the first time since 1990. The Eagles are led by outside hitter Abby Frohning's 366 kills. She's also second on the team in assists with 280 behind Maddi Hemrich (434). Frohning has contributed 206 digs...Quincy Notre Dame topped reigning Class 2A champion Eureka in the super-sectional. Sophomore Sydney Hummert has 359 kills and 307 digs. The Raiders' Monica Brown has 137 blocks and Molly Penn 124. Notre Dame is making its 14th state trip and first since winning the 2011 title under coach Rich Meyer...St. Thomas More avenged one of its losses by defeating Tri-Valley in the sectional final. Mica Allison has a team-high 307 kills while adding 377 assists. Junior libero Haley Elan has contributed 332 digs and senior setter Hayes Murray has 508 assists...Harvest Christian has been led by junior setter Kaitlyn Murray (798 assists) and libero Candis Kaplan (345 digs).

FYI: See the accompanying story about University High and Belleville Althoff. St. Viator lost its final four regular season matches before going on a five-match winning streak to reach its first Final Four. Resurrection, under first-year coach Mike Sopocy, also is making its state debut. Catherine Hickey, who has committed to NCAA Division II Limestone College in South Carolina, leads St. Viator with 533 kills. The 5-foot-11 senior had 21 kills in a super-sectional win over Bartonville Limestone. Getting her the ball is Michaela Mueller, who has 1,032 assists, 15th most in state history. Brittany Welch, a 5-11 senior with a 27-inch vertical jump, leads Resurrection with 302 kills. Setting her up is Christina Gatta (653 assists).

Class 4A

FYI: Second a year ago to Chicago Mother McAuley, Minooka is led by 5-10 Dayton-recruit Allison Papesh, who has 336 kills. Other college recruits are Raquel Perinar (Tennessee), Holly Bonde (Kansas State), Taylor Baranski (Iowa State), Samantha Hermann (Ferris State) and Olivia Klank (Missouri-St. Louis). Minooka's only losses were to Edwardsville and fellow Final Four qualifier Chicago Marist. First-time state qualifier St. Charles North has won 22 straight matches. The North Stars are led by North Carolina-Wilmington recruit Katie Lanz, who has 283 kills and 290 digs. ... Marist's loss was to Mother McAuley in mid September. The RedHawks have won 30 straight. Central Michigan recruit Savannah Thompson,  5-11 outside hitter, leads Marist with 382 kills. The RedHawks took fourth in 2011. The 2007 Class 3A state champion, Crystal Lake Central is making its first state trip since 2009. The Tigers lost twice to Huntley and once to fellow Final Four qualifier Minooka. Their kill leader is sophomore Madde Blake (220).
