Western Kentucky 17, Missouri State 14
Justin Haddix threw for 259 yards and a touchdown to lead Western Kentucky to a 17-14 win over Missouri State on Saturday at Springfield,Mo.
Western Kentucky (3-3, 2-1 Gateway Conference) didn't score in the second half, taking a 17-7 halftime lead over Missouri State (1-6, 0-3) when Chris James made a 54-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter. Missouri State made it 17-14 when Jeremy Dawson intercepted a Haddix pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown with 1:52 left.
The Hilltoppers scored first on a 40-yard pass from Haddix to Chris Hamilton with 6:35 left in the first quarter.
A fluke play let Missouri State tie the game. Tamark McElvane caught a 37-yard pass from Garrett Congdon at the Western Kentucky 2. He then fumbled the ball, which popped into the hands of Jeremy Nicholson, who took it in for the score. Western Kentucky got the lead back on a 5-yard run by Andrew McCloud with 11:33 left in the half before James' long field goal.
Youngstown State 35, W. Illinois 28
Marcus Mason ran for 266 yards and three touchdowns to lead Youngstown State to a win over Western Illinois at Macomb.
Mason broke loose for touchdown runs of 75 and 95 yards in the second half, swinging the momentum of a game that was tied 14-14 at halftime. Junior tailback Monquantae Gibson added touchdown runs of one and 30 yards for the Penguins (6-1, 3-0 Gateway).
Western Illinois attempted to salvage its homecoming with a late rally, as quarterback Steve LaFalce connected with Carl Sims for a 42-yard touchdown pass with less than four minutes remaining. Alex Douglas added a 6-yard touchdown run with one minute left for the game's final points. It was the Leathernecks' third straight loss by seven points or less.
N. Iowa 34, Indiana St. 14
Darian Williams rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns as Northern Iowa beat Indiana State at Terre Haute, Ind., extending the nation's longest Division I losing streak to 24 straight games.
The Panthers (4-2, 2-0 Gateway Conference), winning their fourth straight game against the Sycamores (0-6, 0-2), took away Indiana State's ground game, built a 20-0 lead at halftime and put the game out of reach with third-quarter touchdown runs by James Lindgren and Eric Sanders.
Indiana State, winless in 18 games under second-year coach Lou West, managed 65 yards rushing and was held scoreless until a 1-yard run by quarterback Ben Schmidt early in the third period.
Schmidt was 13-of-28 for 124 yards passing but gave way in the fourth quarter to backup Reilly Murphy, who produced the Sycamores' final touchdown on a 17-yard pass to Carl Berman with just over nine minutes remaining. Murphy, who was 6-of-10 for 100 yards passing, took Indiana State to the Northern Iowa 12 in the closing seconds but couldn't score before time ran out.
Williams led a strong ground attack that produced 439 yards rushing for the Panthers, with Curt Bradley, Sanders and Whitney Lewis each running for at least 70 yards. Sanders, the Panthers' quarterback, also was 13-of-19 for 139 yards passing, and Brian Wingert kicked two field goals.
Robert Barcliff was the top rusher for Indiana State with 35 yards on nine carries. Sam Logan had seven catches for 69 yards for the Sycamores, tying a Gateway Conference record with 176 career receptions.
