The Bloomington Extreme kept the beat going to rock the Wichita Wild, 59-38, tying a franchise scoring record in front of 4,088 fans for its first United Indoor Football victory of the season.
Extreme quarterback Dusty Burk completed 21 of 33 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns to help the Extreme imrove to 1-2. He also rushed eight times for 55 yards and one score.
"It was a team win," Burk said. "Anytime you get points from the defense, one touchdown let alone two, that's great."
"It was sloppy at times. We're still learning how to play together. I'm happy to get Coach (Kenton) Carr's first win."
Burk's scoring passes in the first half covered 36, 13 and 10 yards. The last went to James Walton to make it 28-21 with 9:16 to go in the second quarter. Walton finished with nine catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
"It was a great win. I am emotionally drained," said Carr, whose team was playing in his Eastern Conference opener. "We were only up by six (with a quarter to go) and I thought 'here we go again.' I thought defensively we showed a little bit of life as far as emotion."
"I was very impressed," said Wichita defensive coordinator and general manager Mike McCoy, whose team fell to 0-3. "They've got a lot of weapons. They are well-coached. I really like their quarterback. They put a lot of pressure on us from their defensive front."
Among the things that let fans know it was going to be Bloomington's night was the safety Quince Holman scored by tackling Wichita quarterback Tyler Schuerman in the end zone on the second play of the second half to put the Extreme ahead 30-18.
Holman finished with three of the Extreme's five sacks.
"Marvin Campbell and Jeff Candler, they helped me out a lot, especially on those sacks," Holman said. "They flushed the quarterback out. It was a good defensive and offensive win."
They (Wichita) had heart. They didn't go away. I think sometimes we got content and they chipped away at the score."
"The defensive line got after it," said Carr, whose team won the total yardage battle, 298-219.
Andrew Raymond did his part on offense, catching six passes for 81 yards and one TD and rushing seven times for 17 yards and one TD.
Walton followed the safety with a 31-yard touchdown reception 83 seconds later to make it 36-18.
Former Extreme running back Carlos Lattimore got a chance to display his ball-carrying skills when he recovered a Cliff Edwards fumble and returned it a franchise record 49 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-6 early in the second quarter. It was the first turnover Bloomington forced this season.
Brian Houston provided takeaway No. 2 for the Extreme after intercepting Schuerman with 3:49 left in the half. The play helped negate Burk's first interception of the season 94 seconds earlier by Wichita's Jess Langvardt. The extra possession ended with Burk being intercepted by Orlandus Williams leaving Bloomington on top at the half, 28-18.
As in the season-opener, the Extreme scored on its first play from scrimmage when Burk found Raymond wide open for on a 36-yard pass play. Peter Christofilakos made the first of six extra-point kicks.
Before you could say "nice start," the Extreme was ahead 14-0 lead following a Burk-to-Shatone Powers 13-yard pass.
The Wild got on the board with 4:35 left in the first quarter as Cartez Brown scored from a yard out to cap a drive featuring a 26-yard pass from Schuerman to Donald Payne.
Wichita's kicking woes continued as Eric Overmiller missed a 35-yard field goal and the first two PATs he attempted. The Wild, which didn't score any conversion points, came in having made just one of seven field goals and three of six PATs.
"That's obviously very painful to face that (no conversions) over and over again, but there are a lot of other things we need to address besides that situation," McCoy said. "We need protection up front and to put pressure on their quarterback."
Overmiller's second miss followed a 29-yard Scheurman-to-Carl Cavanaugh completion with 12:25 left in the first half. The Wild went for a two-point conversion after Cavanaugh ended the first-half scoring on an 11-yard reception, A.B. Stokes' running back option pass sailed high.
Wichita hurt its cause when a holding penalty negated a 34-yard touchdown reception by Payne late in the third quarter. However, Payne later scored on a 24-yard reception on the same drive to pull the Wild within 36-24.
Wichita kept the momentum when Williams returned a Burk fumble 42 yards for a touchdown to make it 36-30 as the fourth quarter ended.
"We were right in it," McCoy said. "Our guys played hard. We've got a bye we now. We'll see Bloomington again two weeks from tonight in Wichita."
Christofilakos, who missed two PATs by hitting the right upright, stopped the bleeding with a 21-yard field goal.
Three plays later, James Temple then lit up the Coliseum with a 23-yard interception return to put Bloomington ahead 46-30 with 9:07 left.
Burk opened some breathing room when his 7-yard touchdown run made it 52-30.
