O'FALLON, Mo. — The Normal Cornbelters rallied late but came up short in an 8-6 Frontier League loss to the River City Rascals on Sunday at CarShield Field.
Trailing 8-2 after seven innings, Normal catcher Brian Hakes hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, his first of the season, to close the gap to 8-5.
Third baseman Miguel Torres hit a solo shot in the ninth, also his first of the year, to make it an 8-6 game but the Belters would come no closer.
CornBelters starter Julio Vivas (3-3) gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings to take the loss.
Mike Jurgella was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead River City. Rascals starter Dan Ludwig (3-1) got the win.
Normal (20-19) returns home for a three-game set with Evansville beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
