FLORENCE, Ky. — Brian Hakes followed his RBI-single in the fifth inning with a solo home run in the eighth to lead the Normal CornBelters to a 2-0 victory over the Florence Freedom in a Frontier League baseball game on Saturday.

Julio Vivas (5-4) pitched seven innings en route to the victory in front of 1,912 fans. Shawn Blackwell picked up his eighth save as the Belters improved to 25-28.

Vivas fanned two and walked six as Normal evened the three-game series at one game apiece. Blackwell struck out five and walked one in two innings.

Hakes' third homer of the season was to the opposite field off Cody Gray (7-2), who allowed nine hits in nine innings. The Freedom (33-20), who managed five hits, left 12 runners on base.

Patterson to appear at Corn Crib: Former gymnast Carly Patterson, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, will make an appearance at the Corn Crib for the Belters' July 22 game against the Windy City Thunderbolts.

It will be State Farm Saturday, with gates opening at 5:35 p.m. for the 6:35 p.m. game. State Farm employees, policy holders, friends and family can purchase game tickets for half price for every Saturday home game the Belters play.
