AVON, Ohio — Dalton Wheat's single drove home Douglas Trimble with the winning run in the 10th inning Wednesday as Lake Erie edged Normal, 2-1, in Frontier League action at Sprenger Health Care Systems Stadium.
It was Normal's fourth straight loss since winning its season opener last week. All four defeats have come by one run.
Lake Erie forged ahead in the fifth with a run off CornBelters starter Jacinto Garcia, who struck out five and walked none in five innings.
Crushers starter Nick Deeg blanked Normal on three hits over seven innings, striking out eight.
Normal pulled into a tie against reliever Mason Klotz (1-0) in the eighth when Cody Erickson doubled and scored on a DJ Martinez single.
The Belters received scoreless innings of relief from Nick Bozman, Jonathan De Marte, Anthony Herrera and Kuehl McEachern.
Lake Erie got through to McEachern (0-1) in the 10th. Trimble walked, was sacrificed to second and brought home the winning run on Wheat's hit.
Erickson and Martinez, Normal's No. 8 and 9 hitters, each had two of the Belters' eight hits.
The series concludes Thursday.
