WASHINGTON, Pa. — Edgar De La Rosa pitched six shutout innings in the first game before home runs by Brian Hakes, Aaron Dudley and Nolan Meadows powered the Normal CornBelters to a sweep of a Frontier League doubleheader against the Washington Wild Things on Wednesday at Consol Energy Field.
Meadows' two-out RBI single in the first inning provided the margin in Normal's 1-0 victory in the opener. De La Rosa (2-3) allowed just three hits and walked two and Shawn Blackwell pitched over a two-out walk in the seventh for his 11th save.
Diego Cedeno and Santiago Chirino drew walks from Trevor Foss to start the first. After Dudley grounded into a double play, Meadows' single scored Cedeno from third.
Foss (8-4) worked all seven innings and limited the Belters to just two hits, the second coming on Justin Fletcher's leadoff single in the fifth. He struck out four and walked three.
In the second game, a Hakes RBI single started a four-run second off Brian O'Keefe (3-5). Cedeno drew a bases loaded walk to score the second run before Chirino plated two more with a single.
An inning later, Meadows connected on a solo shot and Hakes smacked a two-run blast with two outs to make it 7-0. Miguel Torres added a two-run single in the sixth and Dudley capped the offense with his two-run homer in the seventh.
Belters starter Sixto Torres allowed three runs own two hits in three innings, striking out six but walking seven. Chad Gendron (2-1) allowed one run in his two innings of relief before Francisco Carillo worked the final two frames, racking up five strikeouts against one walk and one hit.
The series wraps up with a 6:05 p.m. game Thursday as Normal's Julie Vivas (5-4, 3.40 ERA) squares off against Washington's Chase Cunningham.
