CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A three-goal burst to start the second period went for naught Saturday as the Central Illinois Flying Aces allowed the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to rally for a 5-3 victory at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Dalton Messina scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Graham Slaggert added an empty netter with 27 seconds to play as both teams moved to 3-2-0 as Central Illinois went 0-for-2 on the weekend.
Aces goalie Kris Carlson made 36 saves while Cedar Rapids counterpart Blake Pietila finished with 31 stops. Jakub Lacka, Matt Gosiewski and Calen Kiefiuk had the Central Illinois goals.
After Carlson made 16 of his saves in a scoreless first, Central Illinois struck first — for the first time this season — on Lacka's tally with assists from Tyler Madden and Zach Risteau 1:39 into the second.
Gosiewski followed with an unassisted short-handed marker at the five-minute mark and Kiefiuk made it 3-0 three minutes later with helpers from Max Andreev and Davis Bunz. Andreev's team-leading seventh assist extended his scoring streak to five games.
But the rest of the game was all RoughRiders as they peppered Carlson with 18 shots in the second. Tyler Jubenvill got Cedar Rapids on the board at 11:49 and Roman Ahcan, who was with the Aces in the preseason, followed with an unassisted shorty at 15:21.
Neil Shea then tied the game less than three minutes into the third before Messina and Slaggert gave Cedar Rapids the win.
Central Illinois returns to action Friday at Dubuque.
