MUSKEGON, Mich. — Thanks to Wyatt Bongiovanni and Adam Brizgala, the Central Illinois Flying Aces seemed to miss their wake-up call Wednesday morning.
Bongiovanni completed a hat trick with two third-period power play goals and Brizgala turned back all 21 shots he saw as the Muskegon Lumberjacks notched a 3-0 victory over the Aces at L.C. Walker Arena.
The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for Central Illinois (6-5-0) ahead of its first true home games at Grossinger Motors Arena this weekend, against Youngstown on Friday and Dubuque on Saturday.
Aces goalie Kris Carlson finished with 32 saves while Central Illinois racked up 37 minutes in penalties leading to eight power plays for Muskegon (4-5-1). Marko Reifenberger was whistled for five minors and Max Andreev totaled 19 penalty minutes and engaged in a fight with Matt Staudacher.
Emilio Petterson assisted on all three of Bongiovanni's goals, the first coming just three minutes after the 9:30 a.m. (Central) faceoff.
Bongiovanni netted his second tally 8½ minutes into the third with Reifenberger in the penalty box for slashing, then converted again just 2½ minutes later with Mike Callahan serving time for high sticking.
