BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington Thunder general manager and associate coach Dan Jewell has accepted an assistant coaching position at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Jewell has been on the Thunder coaching staff since the team's inaugural United States Hockey League season of 2014-15. He is the organization’s first coach to move on to the NCAA Division I ranks.
Jewell had recently been promoted from assistant coach to GM and associate coach.
“With the hockey offseason in full swing, now is the time of year when a lot of coaching positions become available. We’re excited to see Dan fill one of those openings and take the next step in his coaching career,” Thunder head coach Mike Watt said. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future."
Jewell helped 25 players earn scholarships to play Division I hockey during his time with the Thunder. This past season he was assistant general manager and assistant coach and helped assemble a roster including 21 players with NCAA Division I commitments.
Watt will assume the role of general manager in addition to being head coach. The Thunder have begun the search for an assistant coach to complete the coaching staff.
