BLOOMINGTON — Kyle Bragg probably wouldn’t mind seeing the Bloomington-Normal Match Play City Championship played at Highland Park Golf Course every year.
Bragg stretched his Highland Park winning streak to seven by slipping past qualifying medalist Joe Bierbaum, 1-up, in a championship flight second-round match Wednesday.
When the tourney was last held at Highland Park in 2008, Bragg won five matches en route to the title. He has two victories this week and will play the winner of today’s second-round match between Jay Sparks and Adam Havens in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Drew Meiner and Alan Bardwell also will be in the quarterfinals after second-round wins Wednesday.
Meiner downed Austin Egbers, 2 and 1, while Bardwell earned a 4 and 3 victory over three-time winner Elston Mitchell. That means Meiner will play defending champion Mike Cushing or Brandon Duffy on Friday. Bardwell, the winner of last year’s Medal Play Tournament, gets Josh Eggleston or Gavin Halsey in the quarterfinals.
The other two second-round matches today pit four-time champion Tom Kearfott against Eric Wittmer and Jordan Hall meeting Eric Meier.
