5 years ago (2012): The Illinois State soccer team earned an NCAA bid by winning its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference championship with a 5-1 win over Indiana State. Rachel Tejada scored the game’s first goal in the 26th minute and added two assists for the Redbirds.

15 years ago (2002): Houston Texans starting right guard Ryan Schau will miss the rest of the season because of foot injuries. Schau, who played for Bloomington High School and the University of Illinois, was placed on injured reserve with a dislocated toe on his right foot and a broken bone in his left foot.

25 years ago (1992): Brett Comincioli stripped Cerro Gordo halfback Mickey Tirpak, picked up a loose ball and ran 71 yards with the fumble recovery for a touchdown with 1:58 left as No. 2-ranked Gridley shocked the No. 8 Broncos, 10-6, in a first-round Class 1A playoff game.

50 years ago (1967): Quarterback Jerry Kinnikin, hobbled by injuries most of the season, was a key man in almost all of Illinois State’s scores in a 41-7 thrashing on Winona (Minn.) State. The win coupled with Western Illinois’ upset of Central Michigan gave the Redbirds a share of the conference championship.
