5 years ago (2013): Seniors Addison Bounds of Prairie Central and Jaren McCunn of Eureka and junior Keita Bates-Diop of University High were all unanimous selections on the all-Corn Belt Conference basketball team. U High won the league championship with a 14-0 record for the second consecutive season.
15 years ago (2003): CCIW scoring leader Katie Cantrell led balloting by league coaches for the conference’s most outstanding player award. The 5-foot-10 senior guard from Normal Community is the first Illinois Wesleyan player to earn the award since women’s competition began in 1986-87.
25 years ago (1993): Despite a 26-point scoring performance by Caryn Brune, Illinois State fell to Southern Illinois, 68-57, in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. Courtney Porter added 17 for the Redbirds, who finished their season with an 11-16 record.
50 years ago (1968): Normal Community used its superior shooting and height to break away from LeRoy late in the first period in a first-round regional tournament game at NCHS’ Neuman Gymnasium. Ted Neuman and Bob Oliver led the Ironmen with 29 and 23 points, respectively.
