5 years ago (2012): Tri-Valley captured the first playoff win in school history with a resounding 42-7 thrashing of Havana in a Class 2A first-round game. Quarterback Blake Cowden rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns to anchor the Vikings’ offense.

15 years ago (2002): Normal West’s Meghan Braffet won her fourth career regional crown, crossing the finish line in 17 minutes, 43 seconds to win the Class AA Bloomington Regional at Normal’s Maxwell Park.

25 years ago (1992): Illinois State forward Thomas Hunter admitted he was shocked when he learned he had been chosen the Missouri Valley Conference preseason Newcomer of the Year by the league’s media. Thomas is in his first season after transferring from Cowley County Junior College in Arkansas City, Kan.

50 years ago (1967): Illinois State quarterback Mike Phillips has been chosen as the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference back of the week. Phillips gained 58 yards in 10 carries and scored one touchdown in the Redbirds’ 21-17 win over Western Illinois. He also passed for 88 yards and one touchdown.
