5 years ago (2012): Zach Iannucci has been hired to be the first men’s lacrosse coach at Illinois Wesleyan, IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges announced. The 25-year-old Iannucci was an assistant at Oberlin College (Ohio), where he spent the 2012 season as defensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team.

15 years ago (2002): Christian Goy’s first-place finish led Illinois State to the Missouri Valley Conference men’s cross country title. Goy, this year’s NCAA Indoor mile champion, covered the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 48.2 seconds to help the Redbirds outdistance second-place Drake.

25 years ago (1992): For the second week in a row, Tina Rogers was named the Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week. Rogers, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Mount Pulaski High School, smashed 34 kills and hit .402 in Illinois’ weekend victories over Minnesota and Iowa.

50 years ago (1967): Undefeated and untied University High School meets once-tied Normal Community for the Intercity and Corn Belt Conference championships tonight at Hancock Field. Fullback Vince Lott and quarterback Jack Neal have scored 128 of U High’s 146 points this season.
