5 years ago (2013): Cole Hasselbring scored 21 points to lead the Cissna Park boys basketball team to its first sectional championship in seven years with a 46-31 Class 1A victory over Arthur-Lovington at Danville Schlarman. Hasselbring added 10 rebounds for Cissna Park, which also got nine points from Beau Anderson.
15 years ago (2003): No. 14-nationally ranked Illinois Wesleyan clinched a conference title share as well as an NCAA playoff berth with a 73-65 win over Elmhurst in the final regular-season basketball game. Augustana and Carthage also shared the title but lost the playoff tiebreaker criteria.
25 years ago (1993): Mike VandeGarde drove straight down the middle of the lane for a slam dunk with 1:50 remaining to put the exclamation point on Illinois State’s 71-59 win over Northern Iowa for the first Missouri Valley Conference outright basketball championship in ISU history.
50 years ago (1968): Octavia scored 11 points in the final 1:55 of the first half and soared on to beat Lexington, 79-60, and win the Heyworth District Basketball Tournament. Led by Kery McClure’s 26 points, it was Octavia’s third straight district title.
