5 years ago (2012): Sophomore Eddie Plesha scored on an assist from Austin Bange five minutes into the match to give Normal Community’s soccer team an early lead, but Romeoville rallied to top the Ironmen, 2-1, in the semifinal round of the Class 3A O’Fallon Sectional.

15 years ago (2002): Charlie Thomas of Normal, a professional long driver, finished 15th in the senior division of the RE/MAX Long Drive World Championship in Mesquite, Nev. Thomas, the 1997 Illinois PGA Open Long Drive champion, was competing at the world tournament for the first time.

25 years ago (1992): Juniors Ryan Swidler and Ryan Hillman combined for 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns to lift Olympia past Peru St. Bede, 17-12, for its first Corn Belt Conference victory of the season.

50 years ago (1967): Quarterback Bob Bess, a Bloomington High School product, is on the casualty list for Illinois after the Illini were battered 47-7 by Notre Dame. Bess joined starting quarterback Bob Naponic on the shelf, leaving senior Dean Volkman as the team’s only signal caller.
